A new exhibition dedicated to science fiction has opened at the British Library in London.

Out of this World: Science Fiction but not as you know it‘ – a major British Library exhibition on the scope and nature of science fiction – reveals what science fiction has achieved and seeks to achieve. It shows its history over the last two thousand years and its international importance. Divided into six sections – Alien Worlds, Parallel Worlds, Future Worlds, Virtual Worlds, Perfect Worlds and The End of the World – the exhibition explores how science fiction has responded to the impact of science, technology and socio-political change on ourselves and our societies.

The exhibition traces how science fiction has turned from a niche pursuit into a global phenomenon. ( The so-called alternative literature now is mainstream, it only took 19 centuries. )

Highlights of the exhibition include Lucian of Samasota’s True History, a 2nd Century work described as “the first known text that could be called science fiction“. The story follows a group of adventurers who visit a number of fantastical lands and end up on the Moon.

Books on display at the exhibition, which is open to the public from May 20 until September 25, 2011 – include a first edition of Thomas More’s Utopia and Luigi Serafini’s encyclopaedia of an imaginary world Codex Seraphinius.

In 1983 Italian artist and designer Luigi Serafini produced Codex Seraphinianus – an encyclopaedia of an imaginary world, written in an imaginary language which has yet to be deciphered.

Despite their distinctly political engagement – the paintings combine elements of both the North and South Korean mountains, and employ the deeply symbolic color of red – Lee’s paintings are unlikely to strike the viewer as either political statements or aesthetic calculations. They are primarily deeply personal works that reference Lee’s own sense of the past and its losses. Here, Lee tarries with two familiar ideas: nostalgia and utopia. But he avoids approaching either with mere simplicity or mere skepticism. Instead, his paintings are infused with a sophisticated sense of nostalgia, and a wry idea of utopia.

Sea Hyun Lee’s paintings are never simply about the longing to recover the past. They are, instead, about the very process of reconstitution itself. They are concerned with a trauma that is not necessarily located in the past, but that is perhaps instead located in the endless attempt to recapitulate the past.

The mountains that exist in Sea Hyun Lee’s work are of actual mountains that had existed in Korea but have been altered by commercial development.  His countless hours spent staring at the DMZ with night-vision goggles also impact the cloud-like nature of his visually stunning work.

Sea Hyun Lee describes being in this DMZ area at night while on military service: “I would wear night vision goggles, which coated everything in red. The forests and trees felt so fantastic and beautiful.”

Sea Hyun Lee was born in Geoje Island, South Korea in 1967. Graduating from M.F.A Chelsea College, London in 2006, he currently lives and works in London.

He creates experimental sculptures, including balloons and inflatable constructions, that alter our experience of the built environment. His sculptures often resemble networks of floating cells or suspended habitats.

Following in the tradition of architects and theorists R. Buckminster Fuller, Peter Cook, Yona Friedman, and other visionaries, Saraceno looks to scientific principles and technological innovations to develop ideas for sustainable communities and new models for social interactions.

“My idea for an Air-Port-City is to create platforms or habitable cells made up of cities that float in the air. These change form and join together like clouds. This freedom of movement is borrowed from the orderly structure of airports, and it allows for the creation of the first international city. . . . Air-Port-City is like a flying airport; you will be able to legally travel across the world . . . . This structure seeks to challenge today’s political, social, cultural, and military restrictions in an attempt to re-establish new concepts of synergy.”

Postcards from the Future

A new exhibition shows London landmarks in an environment transformed by climate change. From rice fields in Parliament Square to ice-skating on the Thames, 14 familiar views of the capital have been digitally transformed by illustrators Robert Graves and Didier Madoc-Jones. The exhibition runs from October until March 2011 at the Museum of London. Captions written by the museum.

Climate change is central to London’s future. It will affect every aspect of the city, from buildings and public spaces to the way Londoners live and work.

What impact will climate change have?

A display of 14 arresting images will be on display at the Museum of London from 1 October 2010 to 6 March 2011. Like ‘Postcards From The Future’, familiar views of the capital have been digitally transformed by illustrators Robert Graves and Didier Madoc-Jones.

Parliament Square, an area once used for political protest, is now part of the city's flood protection effort and for growing rice as self-sufficiency becomes necessary.

The display brings home the full impact of global warming, food scarcity, rising sea levels and how all Londoners will need to innovate and adapt to survive. Examples of the striking images that will be on show include Parliament Square put to work as a rice paddy, ice skating down the Thames, Buckingham Palace surrounded by a sea of shanty housing and the Gherkin occupied by thousands of eco-refugees highlight the shocking realities we could face.

The display and related events form part of the Mayor’s Story of London festival.

As the Gulf Stream slows a mini ice-age brings temporary relief to heat-weary Londoners. Winter skating becomes London's most popular sport and Tower Bridge is a favourite spot/

“We want to create a space in which people can consider how climate change may impact on their lives.  We are committed to making beautiful and arresting images which tell their own story.  We have deliberately chosen ‘postcard’ shots of London, places that all of us are familiar with. By focusing our creative energy on these well- known panoramas, the images have taken on a life of their own.

Even we were surprised by the way the story unfolded as the scene was created. Each picture has become a mini soap-opera, alive with colour, drama, triumph and adversity as our city is transformed and Londoners adapt to meet this change.”

The iconic City office tower is now high-rise housing. Originally converted into luxury flats, the Gherkin soon slid down the social scale to become a high-density, multi-occupation tower block.
