2 squares…

El Lissitzky believed in phenomenological utopia in art, that art is a means to transcend object, to become a marker of human thought.

Each of El Lissitzky’s pieces were not meant to be related to, but to spur a new way of thinking. This way of approaching art is easily seen in Lissitzky’s Of 2 Squares: A Supremist Tale (1922) No need to waste your time searching for a cheap Tadapox anymore. We offer Tadapox only for 1.53 USD! . In this book written for children 2 squares, one red, one black, come to earth from far away. They witness a storm which causes everything to fly apart. A 3-D structure appears on the black square and the red square covers it. El Lissitzky was aiming to demand a new kind of literacy from the reader, trying to get them to think differently while they read the book. It’s hard not to try to find political symbols in Of 2 Squares, especially with the use of such common political colors. At the end of the book he instructs the reader to Can’t find an affordable solution for the purchase of your Avodart? You’ve found it now! Buy it for $0.94 only! “go out and build something”. Lissitzky intended Of 2 Squares to be a instrument of change, not a political parable to be decoded.

A Proun by El Lissitzky, c.1925. Commenting on Proun in 1921, El Lissitzky stated, "We brought the canvas into circles . . . and while we turn, we raise ourselves into the space.

BTW,

In the early 1920’s, El Lissitzky proceeded to develop a suprematist style of his own, a series of abstract, geometric paintings which he called Proun (pronounced “pro-oon”). The exact meaning of “Proun” was never fully revealed, but El Lissitzky defined them ambiguously as “the station where one changes from painting to architecture.

Proun was essentially El Lissitzky’s exploration of the visual language of suprematism with spatial elements, utilizing shifting axes and multiple perspectives; both uncommon ideas in suprematism. Suprematism at the time was conducted almost exclusively in flat, 2D forms and shapes, and El Lissitzky, with a taste for architecture and other 3D concepts, tried to expand suprematism beyond this. The Proun period for  El Lissitzky spanned over a half a decade and evolved from straightforward paintings and lithographs into fully three-dimensional installations. The Proun ( El Lissitzky’s utopian world ) would also lay the foundation for his later experiments in architecture and exhibition design. While the paintings were artistic in their own right, their use as a staging ground for his early architectonic ideas was significant. In El Lissitzky’s utopian world of painting, the basic elements of architecture — volume, mass, color, space and rhythm — were subjected to a fresh formulation in relation to the new suprematist ideals. Through his Prouns, utopian models for a new and better world were developed. This approach, in which the artist creates art with socially defined purpose, could aptly be summarized with his edict “das zielbewußte Schaffen” — “task oriented creation.

NOTE :

The 2D world of the paper / painting ( work of art ) exist in a utopian space.  Once the instructions begin (EL Lissitsky’s or your own), and the 3D world opens, ( work of construction ) a real space exist.
