An explanation, not an answer may give insight to the appreciation of yesterday’s puzzle.

Lesson / Koan : Water is formless until finding a vessel to temporarily call home.

The word “perception” comes from the Latin words perceptio, percipio, and means “receiving, collecting, action of taking possession, apprehension with the mind or senses.”  If the classical definition speaks of possession with the mind, this could be the blockage of vision for eyes only relying on sight.  Many artists, including James Turrell have experimented with the Ganzfeld effect as a type of mediation to increase an individual’s senses.  What is a Ganzfeld effect?  The Ganzfeld Want to get the best Flonase deal and save on your purchase? Visit our online store and get it for as much as 39.57 USD now! effect happens when the sensory system is steadily overloaded with a uniform signal.  For example, a uniform, steady and all-encompassing soft light to the eyes will cause a “loss of vision”.  This happens because, essentially, there is no change in the signal going to the brain, so the brain stops processing the signal.

Could it be that for so many the Ganzfeld effect is the signal to the brain per one’s everyday life?  In other words, yesterday’s puzzle is unsolvable because blindness is now a mental not visual disease.  Folding the discussion back toward this last week’s posts…Utopia is always in the mind, and the temporary signal it unlocks is waiting to be discovered anew each time one travels to its destination.  Mr. De Bono ( lateral thinking ) proposes that most of the problems in thinking are perceptual.  What one perceives is a direct result of interplays between past experiences, including one’s culture.

The processes of perception routinely alter what humans see. When people view something with a preconceived concept about it, they tend to take those concepts and see them whether or not they are there. This problem stems from the fact that humans are unable to understand new information, without the inherent bias of their previous knowledge. A person’s knowledge creates his or her reality as much as the truth, because the human mind can only contemplate that to which it has been exposed. When objects are viewed without understanding, the mind will try to reach for something that it already recognizes, in order to process what it is viewing. That which most closely relates to the unfamiliar from our past experiences, makes up what we see when we look at things that we don’t comprehend.” from Phenomenology of perception, By Maurice Merleau-Ponty

BTW,

James Turrell is building his perceptual utopia in the high desert of Arizona at Roden Crater.  Mr. Turrell is transforming the crater ( a volcanic cone from an extinct volcano ) into a massive naked-eye observatory.  The Roden Crater project has been in a process of construction for more than thirty years.  Each year the promise is made to open the project to the public.  Each year becomes next year for more than a decade now.  The idea of waiting for something makes it more exciting, or Mr. Turrell’s patience is a lesson for all.

What each individual viewer at the crater witnesses is also worth the wait.  Yesterday’s puzzle is producing exactly the same effect.

NOTE :

The Ganzfeld effect (from German for “entire / complete field”) is a phenomenon of visual perception caused by staring at an undifferentiated and uniform field of color. The effect is described as the loss of vision as the brain cuts off the unchanging signal from the eyes. The result is “seeing black” – apparent blindness.”  Some of the earliest reported occurrences were of the artic explorers. When the environment around them, both ground and sky, was all white, due to the ice and the atmospheric conditions they would suddenly see darkness setting in and everything would be black. At first they thought they were going blind.
