The Garden of Earthly Delights - The exterior shutters of triptych.

Lesson / Koan : Worship is self taught.

Western thought is the passage from outside to inside.  Eastern thought, just the opposite…inside to outside.  Neither is better, right or wrong for that matter.  This subject touches on the posts of the last few days involving Hieronymus Bosch & Melvin Sokolsky.  The appearance of the sphere and the attached symbolism, etc.   The sphere, and the idea of stability for a world protected from the unwanted. Utopian or not it can be argued, both Bosch & Sokolsky project beyond the fragile nature of the shell of the sphere to another place.  This place is the garden for Bosch, a known source of temptation for a few, but now a place of enlightenment for the masses.  For Solkolsky, the trapped individual represents a floating goddess, only waiting to be followed by earthlings.  Same story only four hundred years apart, or that the common shared experience for all is of “being saved” or “being save”, a utopia by yet another name?

The triptych rose as a popular art form for one primary reason…transportation.  One could fold up the panels of the triptych, and the show could go on the road.  But, Bosch also painted the exterior panels of his triptych.  The painting of these exterior panels, are far more important and noteworthy, than the interior painting filled with a special kind a light for all.  As mentioned before, Bosch is hiding the one thing which his interior promises to remove in his new garden.  The exterior panels are filled with temptation as a type of Pandora’s box…once opened, blindness is inevitable.  Investigating the exterior panels closely, Bosch’s seduction is his real masterpiece, in all its grisaille.  Grisaille is a term for painting executed entirely in monochrome or near-monochrome, usually in shades of grey.  Bosch creates a cloud of dust which he magically removes later, or the soot covering his exterior panels contains the ability to cast a toxic spell. Sokolsky :

The crowds watching & following the bubbles of Sokolsky are being spellbound as well.  The female figure, ( goddess)  enclosed in the clear sphere can not speak to her followers.  Her promise, or Sokolsky’s promise, is one of sacrifice.  The removal and isolation on the floating island acts as a symbol of a perfect life, no language or words are necessary.  The world of the sphere appears ideal, but just as Bosch did, it is only a ancient trap waiting for more victims.  Sokolsky’s seduction is completed as his Paris bubbles travel to New York, projecting America as utopia again.  Mr. Sokolsky’s visual metaphor crosses the Atlantic, only to reappear as a so called floating Statue of Liberty for America’s new bubble goddess protecting all citizens. ( “being save” scenario )

The Garden of Earthly Delights by Hieronymus Bosch, 1490-1510.

The work that put Sokolsky on the map was his 1963 Bubble series in which impeccably dressed models float dreamily over urban land and waterscapes. “I’d have to credit Hieronymus Bosch for those images,” he notes, “if you look at his painting The Garden of Earthly Delights you will come across a nude couple in a bubble. That image stayed with me from childhood.”
